I love when a designer takes their signature scents and updates them for the modern woman. Esprit d'Oscar, the new scent from Oscar de la Renta, is a modernized version of the classic fragrance OSCAR, which was released in 1977 as a means of capturing the very essence of his beautiful fashion designs. The AMAZING {no seriously guys, incredible}, Vogue Influencer Network asked me to try Esprit d'Oscar and let you all know what I think! While I am no fragrance expert, I am quite certain that I know what I like, and have always been a bit of a perfume collector.

This beautiful scent is incredibly floral, and is described as having hints of Sicilian Lemon, tuberose {huh?}, and vetiver {whaaaaa?}. While I don't know what most of those things are, I can tell you that Esprit d'Oscar is an elegant, feminine perfume designed for the fragrance lover. It is very distinct and mature, and like most high end perfumes, strong enough that one spray will suffice. I am so grateful to the Vogue Influencer Network for letting me try this beautiful fragrance, one that is sure to become a staple on vanities all over the world.

Once again, when I'm down I find myself drawn back to supergirl inspired editorials, {gotta stop being so predictable, little Miss Rachel}. These photos of Missy Rayder, shot by Thomas Klementsson for Intermission, embody such a sense of empowerment while maintaining an undeniable sex appeal that makes them both impactful and accessible at the same time. The sheer capes are feminine and delicate, while that alligator print body suit, the cut-out suede, and that bizarre shredded dress demand your attention and create a look that only a strong, self-assured woman could pull off. In short, I'm totally in love.

I know I've been a bad blogger as of late, and I am so, so sorry to leave you dolls floating aimlessly through the blogosphere. I've been channeling most of my energy into finding the dream job in Chicago, a process that is so exciting and yet completely draining. Starving For An Argument

As I am most likely the only fashion blogger in the blogosphere that holds a degree in Jewish Studies, {"what exactly are you planning on doing with that degree?"}, it seems only natural that I lend a word on this horrifying John Galliano mess.

As you all know, Mr. Galliano was arrested in Paris for making anti-Jewish remarks in a bar, and shortly after his arrest The Sun obtained a video recording of Galliano on a similar tirade from late last year. There is no excuse for this behavior, and I applaud France for having a no-tolerance policy on such hateful actions. From the moment I watched the documentary Catwalk for the first time, I fell in love with Galliano and his uniquely theatrical designs and runway shows. The man is an inspirational designer with an obvious flair for the dramatic. Which leads me to my point, that it is overwhelmingly evident that Galliano's anti-Jewish remarks were primarily the drunken babbles of a sad and attention hungry man. For Galliano to be a Hitler sympathizer would be the most hypocritical, self-damning action the man could make. He is an openly gay man, {named one of Britain's most influential gay people}, who, because of this, would have been a direct target in Hitler's Final Solution. This fact alone reveals that Galliano's remarks about loving Hitler were only for his love of shock-factor. I cannot attest to the validity of his anti-Jewish remarks, but would hope that he would not harbor such hateful feelings when he is employed in an industry that was revived in the post WWII era by Jews, {i.e. Ralph Lauren, Anne Klein, Calvin Klein, Diane von Furstenberg, Donna Karan, Kenneth Cole and Michael Kors}.

From the video of his earliest outburst it is evident that Galliano was entirely intoxicated, if not deranged, and it is clear that he has a series of serious problems that desperately need to be addressed. I admire the Dior fashion house for realizing that talent and genius are sullied by hatred, and I hope that this industry that I love so much will continue to work to create beauty and eliminate intolerance.

Road Full of Promise

Happy Inspirational Humpday, loves! Today we're going to get a bit serious, a bit personal, just bear with me here. I want to talk about the relationship that exists between style and strength.

A few months ago things seemed to shatter. Everything that I thought was undeniably true turned false, my sweet turned sour. This was a new pain, a big girl pain, the kind that leaves you walking around with a gaping hole in your chest for weeks at a time, the kind that creates silent sobs. I'll be honest with you, for a bit there, I gave in. I succumbed to the hurt, wallowed in it, and let it envelope me {and I read Pride and Prejudice...three times}. But after a few days I did something so seemingly insignificant that would turn out to be the single most impactful move I could've made on my path to regaining a sense of myself.

I got dressed.

I put on the most ridiculously chic, seasonally inappropriate outfit I could assemble of rose chiffon, skin hugging satin, and sky-high heels and I wore it in bed. Every day, no matter how terrible I was feeling, I managed to put together an ensemble that I knew made me look and feel good, and every day I felt the strength grow within me. It is in this way that personal style is undeniably empowering. It is a form of creative expression that serves as the armour to give us the strength to face the day. Without style this incredible struggle, {which I am grateful for everyday}, could have very well eaten me alive. I can't express to you how much I value the roll that my personal style and this incredible online community has played in leading me through this experience. I don't believe that there is a bounty of influences out there that could make a person so much stronger in the way that fashion has done for me.

Something about this editorial from the February issue of FN magazine is so comforting. Maybe it's the accessibility of it, the fact that I myself could pull off each and every one of these looks without looking entirely insane. Maybe it has to do with the story; just a girl in her art studio, nothing overly complicated. Once in a while, especially during the fashion week surge, we need a sharp jolt of simplicity, and I'm not talking about mnmlsm {hehe, see what I did there?}. Cozy knits, a simple setting, tousled hair, jean cut offs, and those sea green bloomers...don't get me started on that color, it just works here. You can almost hear the Stevie Nicks echoing through her studio!

I think I've always been a morning person in disguise, and with my new job I have recently had to embrace an earlier schedule. Wanna know a secret?....I kind of love it. These last few days have been sunny and a bit warmer, and there's nothing better than jumping in my little car when it's dark and watching the sun slowly rise on my drive downtown. Dear lord, the lady is flawless! Here we have Miss Kate Moss for Lonchamp's Spring 2011 ad campaign, and I see one major flaw with these advertisements. The problem is, I don't care one little bit about the product! Not that I have anything against Longchamp bags, they're beautifully well-made and iconic, and I love my "le pliage". It's just that Kate looks so darn gorgeous here, and the styling is just so good {I mean, can we talk about that green dress? Can you say "KY Derby"?}

Scarlet Begonias Tucked Into Her Curls

Happy Inspirational Humpday, dolls! So today's post has just about the most obscure theme any post has ever had in the history of the blogosphere, all inspired by yesterday's events. So yesterday I got my hair cut, just a trim and some layers, no big deal, right? Wrong. The hairstylist did the unthinkable...she straightened my hair. She claimed it would help her touch up the layers, but I'm crying foulplay! So as you can see, the ladies in the photos above are sporting some beautiful, slightly kinked locks in honor of yesterday's tragic events.

Now don't get me wrong here folks, I have absolutely nothing against straight hair, I used to wake up 2 hours early, every day to straighten my hair! But at this point, I do have something against not celebrating what you are blessed with by nature. There is nothing more beautiful or sexy than confidence and love for oneself.
So today it's back to being a curly girl.

Warm weather withdrawals are in full effect here in frigid Kentucky, and I am sick and tired of the manner in which it is limiting my wardrobe. One of my four year olds in preschool asked me why I wear boots every day....it was so depressing {she was wearing a Dora the Explorer outfit, not gonna lie, I was jealous}. I am of the opinion that if all fashion designers based their collections around ballet, theatre, or music, everything would just be prettier. The ballerinas are getting A LOT of love right now from the fashion world, and rightfully so, as ballet is one of the most fashion conscious art forms out there. The fashion world and the ballet world have so much in common that this seems like such a fluid, natural pairing. Both are incredibly body conscious, requiring models and dancers alike to manipulate their bodies to portray a specific message. Copious amounts of chiffon and satin, delicate details, these ballet inspired pieces are basically my bread and butter, so I am reveling in this editorial from Vogue Russia. And with valentine's day approaching, these sweet silhouettes and fragile fabrics will cater perfectly to our sweetheart inspired outfits!

Milan Men's Fashion week kicked off on Saturday, so there truly is no better time for us to turn our focus to the boggling world of menswear. I am a self-proclaimed menswear dork, so I am absolutely loving the street-style shots that are cropping up all over the interwebs! The examples above are such a celebration of proper tailoring and attention to detail, both which completely transform an outfit. I feel as if the vast majority of mens clothing sold in the U.S. is completely oversized, and as a result our poor guys have completely lost sense of what fits! Santa Abandonment Issues

Since my Christmas is probably going to look a little something like this, I have 0.0 reason to ponder upon a gorgeous holiday outfit {sad face}. But, not to worry, I have been spending all of the time I would be thinking about ironically ugly holiday sweaters, planning out my cute New Years outfit! My soiree ensemble will be built around the sequined skirt, a trend I could blame on Nanette Lepore or J. Crew, but will probably chalk up to my undying love for Bob Mackie. The key to pulling off this look is to balance out the glitz of the skirt with a more casual top in a neutral color. Ooooo, I can't wait to blind people with my bedazzled fit come December 31st!

These photos start in Granada and track our trip through Barcelona, Venice, Vernazza, Sienna, Florence, and Rome. Vernazza is a place you all MUST go to if you ever travel to Italy. It is a tiny harbor town in the Cinque Terre region and I swear I have never traveled anywhere so beautiful in my life.

Guess who's baaaaaccckkkk? That's right, we have finally {reluctantly} returned from our incredible European adventure! I am SO excited to begin to share some of the photos with you all! We didn't really take any outfit photos while there, as we didn't have the fancy camera and my wardrobe was incredibly limited, but I hope you guys still enjoy getting a peek into our vacation {right guys? you all like to look at photos of other peoples' vacations...right...right?!}. Hehe well these photos are just from Amsterdam, London, and Paris, but there will absolutely be more to come! As you can see, the trip basically consisted of posing like HUGE dorks in front of important sites and eating really amazing food, {note the incredible vietnamese pho and orgasmic chocolate and coffee flavored french macaroons above, they were both religious food experiences}.

Something Tells Me It's All Happening At The Zoo

So here it is, my very first attempt at taking my own photos! I did it all sans tripod or remote, so it took quite a while. Not too bad, huh? I know it has been ages since I last posted, but I have been very busy and particularly uninspired, and I refuse to put up a post that I am not 100% about. These were taken right before our family trip to the zoo, which is a bit hilarious considering it was me, aged 22, and my parents, surrounded by families with very young, crying children. I know there isn't much to it, but I love these simple, classic outfits. Thanks to Emily from Cupcakes and Cashmere for putting up this great tutorial that I used to make this super cute hairdo!

I remember when I was little I would always see those amazingly pink barbie cakes at the grocery store, and every time my birthday rolled around I would long for one of my own. Back then, I didn't think they could get any better, but it seems I was terribly wrong. Claire Thomas over at The Kitchy Kitchen has given the classic dolly cake a serious upgrade by creating her own couture versions! It all started when her friend was having a Bachelorette party, and Claire made a doll cake that looked like the dress. From then on out she has been creating these sartorial goodies for everyone from the girls at Who What Wear to the Rachel Zoe team. First, an apology. I have been a bad, baaaddddd blogger! I originally said I would be out of town for just 8 days, but that 8 days turned into something more like 2.5 weeks! After our whirlwind tour of the Olympic Peninsula I returned home only to find that it was time to move out of my college apartment in Bloomington, IN. This very lengthy process took 3 days and was followed up with a trip to Indianapolis to help Sam move into his new house, where there was no internet :(. So I was essentially without internet the entire 2.5 weeks, making it impossible to blog. I'm sure you can just imagine the state of my Bloglovin' feed when I returned, it was so overwhelming that I was compelled to simply press "mark all as read" and be done with it. Sooooo in short, I apologize for my extensive absence from the blogosphere, I am still madly in love with every single one of you and hope that you will not hold a grudge!

This short collection of pictures all have one thing in common; upon first seeing them they all stirred up serious emotions and memories directly related to my lifelong romance with summer camps. I attended various sleep-away camps for over 14 years, and had a very serious attachment to one such camp for over a decade. Nothing can really sum up the impact camps had on me, but these photos do a pretty good job of embodying some of the best aspects of the experience. How about a good camp fire with amazing friends? Faux woodstock celebrations with tie dye, bohemian garments, and ridiculous dancing? Arts and crafts and, of course, the ever so important counselor early night out featuring reckless driving down abandoned country roads? To put it simply, perfection.

Why do I looks so sad in all of these photos?! I swear I'm happy, I guess I just have sad eyes. I wore this yesterday mainly around the house, considering it was gloomy and I didn't want to leave, (plus, Bravo reruns of Rachel Zoe Project were calling me). Yesterday I had my first day off work in a while, which means I finally got to pick out my own outfit! It was a pretty uneventful and stormy day, spent taking Duncan to the vet and my sister shopping, so I opted for something basic. These are a pair of my favorite shoes, which I have absolutely worn to death. I know you have seen them before, but I added these stirrup-like wraps made out of cut stockings as an ode to those beautiful Fendis, and also because I totally managed to break these shoes and I thought it would be the best way to keep it cute while securing them to my feet! I don't think I ever mentioned this, but I live in the woods, which makes for great outfit post settings! I've found myself unexpectedly uninspired by many of the fall 2010 lines that debuted this past spring. I suspect that this may be partially due to the fact that a lot of the time, one particular line is plastered across every fashion blog within a 24 hour period, leaving me bored. But the Valentino Fall 2010 RTW line is the exception. The feminine lines, scalloping, and delicate folds, paired with the basic color palate result in a beautiful and classic collection that I absolutely love! I know that it may not be the most shockingly innovative line, but what's so lovely about it is that it presents a new twist on very classic silhouettes and colors. I know I'm in love, but what do you think?

I think I mentioned before that in the early fall months I will be going on a European adventure with S! It pretty much goes without saying that I am SO FREAKING EXCITED...cough, sorry bout that. I wanted to share some of the inspiring photos I have saved up that are only contributing to my uncontrollable excitement. I may have gone picture crazy with this post, but I was having so much trouble narrowing it down to my favorites. The last photo is a picture of love padlocks that couples attach to various gates, bridges, and lamp posts across europe. I made one for S a few months ago, and I'm planning on leaving a few behind in our favorite stops on the trip! We are going to Amsterdam, London, Paris, Nice, Barcelona, Granada, and all over Italy.

I often struggle with compiling outfits for nights out on the town during the summer. My natural tendency to gravitate towards light colors and airy fabrics during the warmer seasons directly conflicts with my desire to dress up my outfit with night-time appropriate pieces. But I think this outfit is the perfect solution to this debacle! I love the sweet, rosy shade of this dress, (which is actually a wrap skirt), and the fabric is perfectly forgiving for hot summer nights. Combined with the black blazer and grey heels it is transformed into a nighttime appropriate ensemble perfect for a dinner date or even the clubs!
I am finally feeling 100% after almost a week of yuckiness! I had a fantastic holiday weekend spent with S by the pool, at street festivals, and even an Eric Clapton concert! I hope everyones weekend was as great as mine. What did you all do?

I wore this outfit yesterday while shopping with my girls! I was so proud of myself because I actually remembered to wear an outfit that was super easy to throw on and off in a changing room. I tend to always forget this and wear something ridiculous. like tights, which inevitably leads to me falling down very loudly in the dressing room! So it's about that time of year again, time for me to start considering my halloween costume. No really, I get so excited about my yearly costume that around mid-summer I start brainstorming. Above are some of my ideas! First, we have these awesome Hell's Angels girlfriends with their amazing hair dos, post nose job bandages, and super sexy outfits. Second, we have this take on a modern day Bonnie and Clyde, which I absolutely LOVE, but chances are I will be sans S this halloween as he will be traveling. But let's be real, I'd prob still be Bonnie even if my Clyde is on vacay. Finally we have the mid 90s moody goth girl with black lipstick, delicate jewelry, and fuck you attitude. This would really just be my excuse for being nostalgic!

Dazed and Confused is clearly one of my top five favorite movies of all time. I've officially watched it twice in the last 24 hours, and I feel zero shame in this. I am utterly enamored with the photography of Harper Smith. I don't even think I can explain it, but something about these pictures make me so happy. Although based off of my pervious posts one can only assume that my love has something to do with his use of desert locations and glitter!

On another note, the Mumford and Sons show last night was amazing! It was in this small bar in Bloomington and it was completely packed. Unfortunately, I am stuck in my apartment in Bloomington for now because we are, at this very moment, in the middle of a tornado storm. I know I should probably be seeking shelter but my bed is really cozy.

So here is the promised outfit post. I wore this to go to dinner with some girlfriends, and i love the ruffle socks! But honestly, it is really hard to wear socks with open-toe heels, I was sliding all over the place. My daddy took these lovely pictures, and I'm still getting the hang of posing and not being awkward in front of the camera, so just bear with me!

This editorial from the fourth issue of Soko zine, shot by Manolo Campion, reminds me how much I love the desert. I think my heart belongs there, where it's earthy and vast and my hair doesn't frizz. Today it is rainy in my old Kentucky home, semi rainforest status. Time to escape out west, perhaps? It's a good thing I don't have to venture out into this muggy weather until late at night when I work, so I can curl up all day with my puppy!

DIY stud pocket shorts!

The studded pocket shorts/pants have been all over the blogosphere as of late, so I decided to do my first DIY in honor of this wildly popular trend!

You'll need:

an old pair of shorts or pants

a pair of scissors

studs (amount needed will vary depending on the size of the pocket, but I ended up only using about 50)

needle nose pliers

Start by taking your scissors and cutting down one of the outside seams of your chosen back pocket, creating the flap that will expose the inside of the pocket.

Press studs into the exposed inner pocket.

Flip the shorts/pants inside out and make sure all prongs have penetrated the fabric.

To secure studs, push all prongs firmly down against fabric using needle nose pliers. Make sure no studs remain sticking out to avoid painful poking.

Et voila! These are still a work in progress, as not all of the exposed inner pocket has been studded, but you can bet that once they are completed they will be a serious summer staple!

I think these examples of sending a blatant message through what you wear are so much classier than my fashion pet peeve: the women's graphic tee My grandmother wears a bracelet encrusted with diamonds that spell out "Bitch", not unlike that ring Bambi is showing off. Loves it!

Bloomington. I am having a hard time leaving these boots in the closet for the summer, as they are pretty much my absolute favorite! When I am feeling lazy about my outfits I tend to turn to my menswear staples, like this oversized shirt, as such items can be both chic and utterly effortless.

Sorry for the cliche title, but I have a thing for martinis, so it seemed apropos. I love 007 films, and of course that means that not only do I have a favorite Bond, (Connery, duh), but I have a couple of favorite Bond Girls. First on the list is the lovely Claudine Auger, who played Domino in Thunderball. She was the epitome of 60's sex-bomb in that film, and how great is that lace body suit à la current American Apparel? In a close second is Jane Seymour, who played Solitaire in Live and Let Die. She is such a natural beauty in this film, so much so that it almost helps me forget those dresses she wore in Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman.

The Craft came on t.v. and I was immediately overcome with the most awesome sense of nostalgia! How AMAZING is this movie? It's like the weird girl's Clueless and has been one of my favorites for such a long time. I am utterly terrified of scary films, and while I'm sure many of you are scoffing at me, as the film is only mildly creepy, I consider it a big accomplishment that I can get through this relic of 90's teendom. Plus, as an added bonus it is laden with amazing studded jewelry and clothing, cross earrings, and overall 90's awesomeness.

I have a serious thing for glitter. I'm pretty sure this obsession began approximately at birth, and has persisted for the following 22 years pretty consistently. In fact, right this very second I have sparkly red nail polish (China Glaze in Ruby Pumps) on my toes. Topshop Unique darling Margaux Lonnberg has the most fascinatingly simple tattoos I have ever seen. It's as if she was just doodling on her skin with a ball point pen and decided a more permanent version would be preferable. While I do think she needs a brownie or two, I think her look is utterly unique and intriguing. Check out her blog "The Killing Moon" here.
